Jacinda, the owner of Hide & Sleep, is an interior designer of children’s rooms based in Melbourne, Australia. She likes sage, soft pink, peach and beige colors. Her preferred style is whimsical. Her customers are stylish young moms.
In this project I collaborated with my sister Iglika, who is a professional illustrator and artist. This is one of our first projects together and it was fun. We were brainstorming on a more abstract logo image in the beginning. Our client liked this proposal but it was not fitting her personal style. So we moved to a more direct approach to the hide and sleep theme – a girl sleeping behind a cloud or girl hiding behind a sleeping cloud. Jacinda loved the latter one.
My current fonts wishlist:
Nelly Script is on the top of my wishlist for some time now. Designed by Crystal Kluge who is a fantastic lettering artist (check her other work for more beautiful fonts). I like the hand drawn look, the flourishes, romantic feeling of this font. It looks beautiful on wedding invitations and just to please the eye in other paper projects.
Lady Rene – yet another sophisticated hand written font. It can enhance the artistic look of a design and add whimsy. A font which looks so effortless and spontaneous is a product of 15 years of education and practice in typography of its author Laura Varsky.
Memimas – it is supposed to look like a school handwriting but there is much more to this font than that. It is cute in artistic way and is perfect for writing a paragraph of handwritten text that is actually readable.Design Garden is running now on WordPress! This is my first time designing a website on WordPress and it was an interesting experience.
I like working with theme frameworks and after some research I chose the woo theme Canvas. This is a very flexible theme having many options for customization. I ended adding new CSS rules for everything but this was easy to do with the custom css field in the options panel. This theme is exactly what I was looking for.
For the graphic design part, I was inspired by some imagery in “Euro Deco”. This book is a rich source of ideas and inspiration for me. I am a Steven Heller’s fan. These days it is turning into an obsession of mine to possess more and more design books. My favorite time of the day is taking a break from the computer and landing on the carpet next to the baby. I look at design books while she is trying to crawl around me and is grasping/drooling on the pages.
It is also one of the few times I am taking the sketchbook and drawing my designs there first and not directly in illustrator. Drawing with pencil and ink, then scanning the design and auto tracing it in illustrator. I am increasingly attracted to hand drawn designs and letters and I am bored with the clean look of purely vector based graphics.
